After more than two years of lockdown, Japan is finally opening up to tourism again. At a press conference in New York yesterday, Prime Minister Kishida announced the long-awaited details: visa-free travel to the country will be possible again from October 11, 2022.
At the same time, most of the currently valid travel restrictions will be lifted. These include, for example, the limit to a maximum of 50,000 entries per day and the obligation to book trips through a certified travel agency.
Details Are Still Pending
The news of the opening of the border is very fresh. The official website regarding the Japanese entry requirements has therefore not yet been updated.
The current situation for entry from a “Blue Country” (including almost all of Europe) is as follows:
- Anyone who is fully vaccinated (and boostered) does not need a negative covid test
- Quarantine after arrival in Japan is not necessary
Currently, a visa is still required for entry. This is also available for tourists – but only if the trip is booked through a travel agency as part of the ERFS system. From October 11, this visa will no longer be necessary and individual travellers are also welcome again.
