Flying Blue: Buy Miles With up to 100% Bonus

You can currently buy miles with a 100% bonus from Flying Blue, KLM & Air France’s frequent flyer program. To get the 100% bonus, you have to purchase at least 24,000 miles (+ 24,000 bonus) for €600. The promotion ends on June 11, 2023.

You normally pay €26.00 for every 1,000 miles. On top of that, there is currently a bonus of up to 100%. This means that instead of €26.00, you’d actually only pay €12.50 per 1,000 miles. This results in a price of 1.25 euro cents/mile.

Without a status, you can buy a maximum of 100,000 miles per calendar year from Flying Blue. In addition, you’ll currently receive the bonus and thus up to 200,000 miles. Elite members can buy up to 300,000 (+ 300,000 bonus) miles.

Your miles will expire after 24 months, unless you earn any miles with your FlyingBlue account. After any activity in your account, the expiration resets for another 24 months. We generally recommend buying miles or points only if you have specific usage in mind. It’s not a good idea to hoard them, since airlines can devalue them anytime.

Spending Miles

FlyingBlue uses dynamic pricing for its award flights, and it’s currently hard to find recommendable use for your miles. One of the more attractive examples are oneway business class fares from Amsterdam to Montreal, selling for 55,000 + roughly €250 in taxes & fees. You can find these fares for flights until September 30, 2023.

Translates to €959 for a business class oneway trip.

The ticket above adds up to €942 (at 1.25 cents/mile + taxes & fees) oneway. While this is not a price worth buying miles for, at least it is cheaper than the horrendous €4,000 cash value for this ticket (which is even higher than the €3,500 roundtrip). This only works if you buy miles with the highest bonus. With Flying Blue, you are better off purchasing discounted business class tickets than buying tickets with miles.
