SAS EuroBonus Implements Cancellation & Rebooking Fees, Lowers Oneway Award Pricing

SAS Airbus A320

Scandinavian Airlines‘ loyalty program EuroBonus has announced bigger changes coming February 1, 2023. These are both good and bad news. The airline will now charge €25 for cancelling or rebooking short haul award flights. Altering long haul flights comes with a €75 fee – both services were previously free. The good news is that booking oneway tickets with miles (or points) in this case gets cheaper. You can now buy them for 50% of a roundtrip, instead of 60%.

Before the changes, it was possible to cancel or change SAS award tickets up to 24 hours before departure without charge. While the fees make spontaneous changes less appealing, you have more time to decide on them: You can now alter your booking until departure. Making changes to award tickets for young children remains free.

SAS EuroBonus explains this move with the high number of spontaneous changes to award tickets, especially to North America. These flights have infamously low availability – and the old rebooking rules contribute to that. According to the airline, more than every second award ticket has been altered or cancelled.

The previous flexible policy on SAS Bonus tickets has resulted in high cancellation and rebooking rates, leading to low availability of these highly valued tickets. As there is a limited number of Bonus tickets available on each flight, this creates a problem when cancellation happens close to departure, a problem that has increased since the pandemic. For example, more than half of Bonus tickets on flights to/from North America either get cancelled or rebooked, and this figure is even higher in premium cabins.

You can still cancel your booking free of charge in the first 24 hours after making it.

Oneway Tickets Available at Half the Price of Roundtrips

SAS pricing for oneway award tickets has been a bit quirky, as the airline previously charged 60% of a roundtrip for a oneway ticket. With the upcoming changes, the price is lowered to 50%.

We are making it easier and cheaper for you to redeem your points on SAS Bonus trips! From February 1st 2023, you can now book one-way Bonus tickets for 50% of the return trip point price.
