United MileagePlus Reverses Devaluation of Miles

United Airlines 787

On Friday, we reported a rather drastic price increase for many award flights at United MileagePlus. In extreme cases, the number of miles required for supposedly cheap Saver Awards was increased by 20-50%, sometimes even up to 150%.

Just as suddenly as these changes came a few days ago, they have now been reversed. Apparently, all tickets now cost exactly the same as before the change.

Tickets on the popular Island Hopper now start again at 8,000 miles (+ €6) for short routes:

Tickets from Frankfurt to San Francisco can again be booked for 30,000 miles (+ €120) on some days:

And occasionally there are also business class tickets from New York to San Francisco for 25,000 miles (+ €6):

Conclusion

After the shock for MileagePlus members this week, this news is a nice relief. However, we should not rest on the good news. All MileagePlus award flights can be cancelled free of charge up to 30 days before departure, so it’s better to book too many tickets than too few. It is not clear whether the price increase was a mistake or a sign that prices may be rising soon.
