Star Alliance member TAP Air Portugal currently sells oneway tickets from both Newark and John F. Kennedy airport in New York to Paris at an incredible low price of US$76 (~€70). Adding checked luggage almost doubles the price, increasing it to US$141 (~€129). These connections feature a rather long layover (min. five hours) in either Lisbon or Porto. But you can easily add a longer stop to your trip, as TAP offers a stopover in Portugal up to five days without raising the fare.
You can find these flights in late 2020 and early 2021. Please be careful when booking in these troubled times, as the fare is not refundable!
TAP currently has an even crazier offer going with departure from San Francisco:
Itineraries via Lisbon usually feature an Airbus A330-900 on the long haul and an Airbus A320 on the short haul legs (3-3). The brand new A330 features a 2-4-2 seating pattern in economy. Trips with a stop in Porto feature an Airbus A321LR segment across the pond (3-3 seating) and an Embraerjet ride to Paris (2-2).
We expect major shakeups in the airline industry over the following months. Some services might be cancelled, aircraft changed or downgraded. The schedule we describe was planned under different economic circumstances and may very well change.
Search & Book
We were not able to retrieve fare rules for this gem and therefore cannot tell you when it’s going to expire. But it shows almost daily availability. We’ve compiled all possible travel dates for you:
The calendar will forward you to skyscanner. Even if you find cheaper tickets via online travel agencies, we recommend booking with the airline. This way, you can add bags without paying extra fees to an OTA, you can get an additional $12 discount from TAP if signing up for their frequent flyer program and – most importantly – you can add a lengthy stopover without increasing the flight cost.
Why is booking with an airline better than with an online travel agency?
More often than not, online travel agencies offer lower fares than airlines do. We still recommend to book with the airlines directly. There are two main reasons for that:
- Better Customer Service
In case any problems like delays, cancellations or missed connections arise, you can communicate directly with the airline. The airlines has to take care of you because you have a contract with them.
If a travel agency issues your ticket, you may have to reach out to them first. You also depend on your OTA to forward you information like flight changes instead receiving them directly from the airline. You may get a prime exhibition of responsibility shifting rather than problem solving.
This especially applies for premium tickets. You don’t want to spend more than €1,000 to wind up with some budget OTA’s telephone hotline in case anything goes wrong.
- Baggage Fees
Economy fares not including hold luggage are more and more common. In most cases, travel agencies charge much higher baggage fees than the airlines themselves. If bags are not included in your fare, airlines are often the cheaper alternative.
