Star Alliance member TAP Portugal has an interesting offer going for flights to Funchal, Madeira in early 2021. Prices for round trips from Luxembourg start at €94 with a layover in Lisbon. The fare rules allow you to add up to five days in the Portuguese capital without increasing the flight cost – when booking via TAP’s website. A checked bag increases the price by €18 each way on TAP’s website. These fares are not refundable, so please proceed with caution in these uncertain times.
If you’re willing to pay a little more, flights from e.g. Amsterdam, London, Frankfurt, Dublin, Geneva, Paris, Lyon, Madrid, or Zurich are available between €120 and €150. However, in most cases you will find nonstop flights for similar prices.
On most flights, you can expect TAP Airbus A320 family aircraft, featuring the usual 3-3 seating pattern and narrow 71cm seat pitch.
We expect further shakeups in the airline industry over the following months. Some services might be cancelled, aircraft changed or downgraded. The schedule we describe may very well change.
Search & Book
The fare rules don’t offer any restrictions like a travel or sales period. There is no minimum or maximum stay as well. According to Google Flights (instructions), flights at the lowest fare are available in January 2021 through March 2021.
We recommend looking for suiting flight dates with our calendar above and proceeding to flytap.com directly.
Why is booking with an airline better than with an online travel agency?
More often than not, online travel agencies offer lower fares than airlines do. We still recommend booking with the airlines directly. There are three main reasons for that:
- The Covid-19 Pandemic
During the worldwide outbreak of Covid-19, planning international travel got more and more risky because of ever-changing restrictions. In contrast to many online travel agencies, most airlines modified their terms & conditions to become more customer friendly. Rebooking conditions are eased, change fees are waived and cancellations are much easier when there is no third party involved.
Further, by adding an OTA to your plans, you increase the risk of one service provider involved going bankrupt. Now, the airline and the online travel agency involved could vanish along with your money.
- Better Customer Service
In case any problems like delays, cancellations or missed connections arise, you can communicate directly with the airline. The airlines has to take care of you because you have a contract with them.
If a travel agency issues your ticket, you may have to reach out to them first. You also depend on your OTA to forward you information like flight changes instead receiving them directly from the airline. You may get a prime exhibition of responsibility shifting rather than problem solving.
This especially applies for premium tickets. You don’t want to spend more than €1,000 to wind up with some budget OTA’s telephone hotline in case anything goes wrong.
- Baggage Fees
Economy fares not including hold luggage are more and more common. In most cases, travel agencies charge much higher baggage fees than the airlines themselves. If bags are not included in your fare, airlines are often the cheaper alternative.
The tickets are issued in booking class O, meaning that a Luxembourg – Madeira roundtrip should roughly get you:
- 500 Miles on Miles&More
- 330 Miles on Air Canada Aeroplan
- 330 Miles on EgyptAir Plus
- 330 Miles on Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles
- 330 Miles on Asiana Club
- 160 Miles on Azul TudoAzul
Adding a Stopover in Lisbon or Porto
If you book directly on TAP’s website or follow the links above, a pop-up window will autmatically open. Its user friendly interface asks you if and how long you’d like to stay in Portugal. This is by far the easiest way to make the most out of your trip to Madeira. A stopover in Porto can be added the same way.
Information & Tips for Madeira
The island of Madeira is a autonomous region of Portugal. It is located roughly 1,000 kilometers off the coast of Portugal and 400 km north of the Canary Islands. The island’s capital Funchal is famous for its steep hills and streets, while the island is best known for the fortified wine namend after it. Madeira is a popular tourist destination thanks to its beautiful, volcanic landscapes and whale watching opportunities.
Best Time to Travel
Similiar to the Canary Islands, Madeira enjoys a mild climate all year round. Average temperatures never climb above 25 degrees or fall below 15 degrees. While November through February is more rainy than other times of the year, precipation is still much lower than on mainland Europe. If you want to go swimming, water temperatures are highest from May to September.
From the Airport to the City
Madeira’s Cristiano Ronaldo Int’l Airport is located in Funchal and served by a huge number of leisure airlines from all over Europe. An hourly bus service connects the airport to the city of Funchal, charging €8 for a roundtrip. A taxi will take 20-30 minutes and charge you around €20. Of course, there are several rental car offices at the airport.
