San José, Costa Rica: SEK 15,550/ €1,470 for Business Class from Sweden

Vulcona Costa Rica

Airlines from two big alliances, SkyTeam and Star Alliance, are competing for customers on their routes to Central America. And this is always good news for us travellers since it will let prices drop. Recent examples of this theory are business class flights from Stockholm and Gothenburg to San José, the capital of Costa Rica. Prices for trips in the front rows of a SkyTeam aircraft start at only SEK 15,550/ €1,470.

Discounted tickets for flights to Costa Rica are a rare find

And more or less the same deal is available for those who prefer to fly Star Alliance. Prices are slightly higher but in the face of business class fares not really notable. You can get tickets for just a little bit north of SEK 15,870/ €1,500.

There are several ways how you can get to San José, all depending on the carrier you choose. Options range from layovers in Amsterdam, Paris, and Panama (SkyTeam) to stops in Munich, Newark or even Toronto when traveling with Star Alliance airlines. Keep an eye open for long layover when booking your flight. Some connections will make you spend 10+ hours at an airport. Even with access to a frequent flyer lounge, this isn’t a pleasant experience.

Skyteam is rather clear when it comes to fare rules. Tickets will be sold until July 18th, assuming that there are still some cheap seats left by then. The offer is valid until March 31st, 2020, and availability is excellent until the end of this promotion.

You’ll have to spend 6 night or at least the night from Saturday to Sunday in Costa Rica to take advantage of this fare. The longest you can stay is 3 months.

Star Alliance is more generous, with minimum and maximum stay requirements. You could return after 2 days or spend up to 12 months in Central America. But that’s about all the information we could get from the fare rules regarding Star Alliance flights. No end date, no travel period. In doubt, we’d think that the terms might be based on the competitors.

Use Google Flights (instructions) to show all available connections and prices. Go to Skyscanner to compare prices or let Google forward you to one of the carrier’s websites for booking. This is what we generally recommend when purchasing business class tickets. If you run into any trouble, this should get you better customer service.

Mileage

SkyTeam

Short-haul flights within Europe will be in booking class J while tickets for long-haul segments should be issued in booking class O. The connections from Panama to Costa Rica will be operated by COPA, and in booking class D. Unfortunately, only the European segments will get you miles with programs other than Flying Blue. The business class flights to Central America earn you revenue based miles on KLM and Air France’s program.

Star Alliance

Tickets for almost all flights will be issued in booking class P or Z. Both of them will get you an earning rate of 100% to 150% with most Star Alliance frequent flyer programs, which makes it more interesting to fly on a partner airline of the biggest airlines alliance, at least from a mileage point of view.
