Star Alliance carriers Lufthansa and Swiss currently have an interesting offer for business class trips from Amsterdam to Abu Dhabi. With a stop in Zurich or Munich, they sell round trips for as little as €981, with an interesting side note: Flights between Europe and Abu Dhabi are code share services, operated by Etihad Airways. You can find these flights in early 2023.
These tickets are not refundable if you cancel them. To change flight dates, you’d need to pay the fare difference, but at least the rebooking fee is waived.

A Swiss or Helvetic Airbus takes you from Amsterdam to Zurich. From there, an Etihad Boeing 787 takes you to the Emirates and back. These planes feature a 1-2-1 seating pattern in business, with half of the seats facing the rear of the plane.
Search & Book
The fare rules don’t give an expiration date for this price. At least six days need to pass between your arrival and departure in Abu Dhabi to get the cheapest fare. You can find availabilities between January and March 2023.
Google Flights displays possible flight dates reliably. You can search for additional flight dates there and book tickets via Lufthansa’s or Swiss‘ website.
Mileage
This is quite tricky. The Star Alliance programs credit miles according to the operating carrier. In this case, that’s Etihad – not a Star Alliance member. On the other hand, programs that credit miles for Etihad flights usually care about the flight number code, which is LX4200, thus a SWISS flight, and so probably not eligible to earn miles either.
So in the worst-case scenario (which is sadly the most likely scenario), you may not get any miles for the long-haul flights, which is obviously a shame.
Swiss issues cheap business class tickets in booking class P, while Etihad segments are usually ticketed in Etihad booking class Z. As we said, we don’t exactly know how most programs will handle this situation, but here’s our guess:
- 8,626 Extra Points + 2,450 Basic Points on SAS EuroBonus
- 8,472 Award Miles + 750 Tier Miles on Asiana Club
- 7,952 Award Miles + 526 Premium Points on ANA Mileage Club
