Sydney: Lufthansa & Singapore Airlines Business Class from Italy for €2,437

Lufthansa Business Class Header Image

The Star Alliance airlines are currently offering good business class prices to Australia again. Departing from Italy, Lufthansa & Singapore Airlines will take you to Sydney and back for around €2,440. We were able to find availability from March to June 2023.

The whole thing can apparently only be booked online if you have a stopover (> 24 hours) in Frankfurt or Munich on the way back. So you can easily end the trip in Germany – even with checked baggage. In general, booking this fare is quite complicated. You should therefore definitely take a look at the Search & Book section. There you will also find a few sample dates.

Here’s the example screenshot for the flights from Milan. The example flights from Bologna can be seen in the screenshot below. Flying from other Italian airports is also possible.

Incidentally, you can also book the Business Flex fare for €2,800, which can be cancelled at any time free of charge.

Info

Currently, (as of July 23, 2022), both vaccinated and unvaccinated people are allowed to enter Australia again without major restrictions. There is no longer a test mandate. But you should not forget the (free) e-visa for Australia.

The cheapest fare can be rebooked without having to pay a rebooking fee, but a refund is not possible. If, on the other hand, you book Business Flex for €2,800, you can cancel at any time free of charge.

The Flights

The scheme is the same for all the example connections we found. First, you fly with Lufthansa (Cityline) from Italy to Frankfurt or Munich. From there, the long-haul flight to Singapore is operated by Lufthansa. From Frankfurt, you usually sit in a Boeing 747-8I, from Munich in the A350. Theoretically, the Europe – Singapore route should also be bookable as a codeshare operated by Singapore Airlines, but we have not found any corresponding connections.

Singapore Airlines then continues on from Singapore to Sydney. Depending on the connection, Airbus A380, Boeing 777 or Airbus A350 are used on this approximately 8-hour flight.

The Fare

It is not known how long the fare will remain available. According to fare rules, there are no restrictions on the travel period. However, the cheap booking classes are already fully booked on many flights. We could currently only find availability from March to June 2022. However, there may also be occasional cheap dates in other months.

The minimum stay requirement for Sydney is 6 days or one night from Saturday to Sunday. According to fare rules, there is no upper limit.

One stopover per direction is allowed. It costs €75 per direction, which usually includes higher departure taxes. You can use this to end the trip in Germany on the way back, should that be more convenient for you.

Search & Book

So far, so good. If you now hope to be able to book this fare simply by searching on Lufthansa.com – or even better via the LH best price search, you’ll be disappointed, as you will usually end up with prices around €3,000 or more.

It is relatively difficult to find available dates with this offer that can be booked online at all. It works best as follows:

Step 1: Date Search Using the Matrix

The ITA Matrix (instructions) is a very flexible flight search tool. The various options for filtering the results are particularly interesting. You should definitely use them here because otherwise only a fraction of the possible connections will be output due to the limited computing time.

For a better connection search, you must first activate the advanced controls. The routing codes can then be entered there to further specify the connection. Learn more in the advanced Matrix guide. My search query usually looked like this:

I recommend the following search parameters for this deal (which can also be seen in the screenshot above):

  • Routing code: The airlines or transfer airports can be specified here. In my example for the outward flight: FRA,MUC O:LH SIN LH
    • FRA,MUC specifies that the first transfer should take place in Frankfurt or Munich
    • O:LH refers to the second flight and specifies that this is operated by Lufthansa. The codeshares with Singapore Airlines are thus excluded (that’s actually a pity. But maybe necessary here, since the codeshares cannot be booked reliably on LH.com anyway)
    • SIN sets Singapore as the second transfer point. Not necessary, but saves computing time
    • LH describes that only flights with a Lufthansa flight number are displayed as the third segment (SIN – SYD). It has been my experience that Singapore Airlines flight numbers cannot be booked anyway. The whole thing is not necessary, you can also try your luck without it.
  • Extension code: Used to further restrict the connection. Multiple commands are separated by a semicolon. Useful for this offer:
    • alliance star-alliance, to limit the number of results
    • maxdur hh:mm, to hide connections with long transfers. Works well on outbound, but is not recommended for the inbound flight.

When you’re done with that, you can use the flexible calendar search to search for all dates within a month. The cheapest (usually only a few dates available) are marked in orange:

If you click on it, you end up in the overview of all possible connections. There you can filter again by duration or departure time if the list is too long. Another click and you end up in the detailed view of the selected flight connection:

Step 2: Book flights on Lufthansa.com

Unfortunately, the flights cannot be booked directly from the matrix. The ITA power tools that can usually redirect you to Lufthansa.com also do not work. You must therefore manually use the multi-stop search on Lufthansa.com and look for the desired flights there.

Sadly, the Lufthansa website’s UI is horrid. I, therefore, used the small tool Go2 by Travel-Dealz (instructions). You can reach it either under this link or directly via the following form:

Wichtig

The results in the matrix usually do not include a stopover in Germany. However, these connections for €2.3xx cannot usually be booked on Lufthansa.com. The solution to the problem: A stopover > 24 hours in Frankfurt or Munich. This gives you a much better chance of finding a bookable connection.

The only thing you have to do is to push the connecting flight (e.g. FRA-BLQ) back by at least one day. That’s why it is usually not possible to book these flights without a multi-stop search.

There is no single recipe for success. Depending on the connection, you must split the connection into at least three segments (e.g. BLQ-SYD, SYD-FRA, FRA-BLQ). But that’s not always enough – especially for connections with a long stopover. If you don’t see the connection you want, you’ll have to break up the journey further. If necessary, look for each segment individually. You have to pay special attention to the travel dates (due to the time difference).

After being redirected to Lufthansa.com, you must select each segment individually. It is important that you choose exactly the same flight numbers as shown in the matrix. Even a “wrong” codeshare can result in the ticket price doubling.

Now select the desired flight numbers one by one:

If the LH website is kind to you, you can now find the tickets at the desired price:

If not, you should first check whether the correct flight numbers have actually been selected. If you can answer yes, there seems to be a problem with the availability and unfortunately, you have to try again from step 1).

Possible Alternative Using Google Flights

The popular flight search engine Google Flights (instructions) shows all kinds of dates that can allegedly be booked for less than €2,400 (then without a stopover). But there is usually a problem with this: you can either not book them at all (price jumps up depending on your selection) or you can only book them with an OTA.

The example below shows long-haul connections operated by Singapore Airlines for €2,358. However, they cannot be booked directly with Lufthansa:

blq syd gf ota

If the procedure described above via Lufthansa.com doesn’t work, it would still be worth a try. But consider the following points:

  1. We do not know whether the booking via Kiss&Fly really works or whether an error message appears when trying to book
  2. In the event of flight changes, the travel agency is your point of contact. The availability of such OTAs is usually very poor and additional fees may apply. For example, Kissandfly is rated 1.4/5 stars on Trustpilot. It should be said that only dissatisfied customers usually report on such portals. Even Lufthansa only gets 1.2 / 5 points there. Not entirely undeserved, because the telephone hotline of LH is miserable.

Stopover in Singapore?

Theoretically, the stopover does not have to take place in Germany. Actually, it would be much more attractive to spend a few days in Singapore instead, wouldn’t it? We see it that way, too.

The problem with this: You won’t have any success trying to book it on Lufthansa.com. In theory, however, the connections should be bookable. At least, via Amadeus (a global reservation system for travel agencies & airlines) I found an example with 5 days in Singapore for €2,479:

Anyone who happens to work in a travel agency shouldn’t have any trouble booking this. Everyone else will. Unfortunately, as of now, we cannot recommend a competent travel agency for such bookings. And unfortunately, many local travel agencies are only interested in selling holiday packages.

Mileage

The booking class for the segments with the Lufthansa Group is P. The codeshares with Singapore Airlines are expected to map to booking class D.

For the example, Bologna – Frankfurt – Singapore – Sydney, you can count on the following credits:

  • 36,930 CV Points on Vistara Club Vistara
  • 26,748 Miles on Singapore KrisFlyer
  • 26,008 Points on SAS EuroBonus
  • 23,354 Miles on Thai Royal Orchid Plus
  • 22,954 Miles on Air Canada Aeroplan

  • 9,778 Miles on EVA Infinity MileageLands
  • 9,778 Miles on Ethiopian ShebaMiles
  • 9,778 Miles on Egyptair Plus
  • 9,778 Miles on Asiana Club
  • 9,778 Miles on Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles
  • 9,778 Miles on TAP Miles&Go
  • 9,778 Award Miles + 250 Tier Points on Virgin Atlantic Flying Club
  • 9,020 Award Miles + 880 Points on Miles&More
  • 7,822 Points on JetBlue TrueBlue
Data provided by miles.travel-dealz.com. Without guarantee on correctness.

The comparatively low values (four digits at many programs) result from the fact that only a few programs will give you miles for Lufthansa flights in booking class P. Therefore, the mileage credit there is based solely on the segments with Singapore Airlines.

Lufthansa’s Business Class

Many of our readers may have already experienced Lufthansa’s business class. Generally, Travel-Dealz writers and readers are not big fans of the Lufthansa business class, even though it is definitely not bad. One reason for that is that the service is too inconsistent: From extremely friendly and quick to unfriendly and slow – everything is possible with Lufthansa, even in business class.
