SQ21/22: €783 / $887 Roundtrips on the World’s Longest Flight from Newark

Singapore Airlines Premium Economy Seat

Star Alliance member Singapore Airlines operates the world’s longest nonstop flight between Singapore Changi and Newark Liberty airport. Currently, the carrier sells roundtrip tickets in premium economy at €783 (~US$843) for trips starting in Newark and €936 (~US$1,008) with departure from Singapore. At the time of writing, this is the cheapest option to enjoy this flight twice. Oneways from Newark start at €601 (~US$647).

Warning

While this is the lowest price we’ve seen for this extraordinary roundtrip, there are still two major red flags:

It is impossible to say when travel restrictions between certain countries will be lifted, and you can only find this fare in November and December 2020.

Further, Singapore Airlines’ nonstop service between Newark and Singapore has been axed in the past. Since the airline industry is in deep financial trouble, we expect this to be one of the first routes to be cut. Then, the airline would rebook you on a flight with a layover.

Singapore Airlines operates an Airbus A350-900ULR on this route. The abbreviation ULR is short for Ultra Long Range. These planes were specifically designed to fly routes like this and feature only business class and premium economy seats – because of this, this fare is the lowest price you might get.

Thanks to newest technology, the Airbus A350 keeps cabin airflow fresher and more humid than common planes. It features a 2-4-2 seating in premium economy with a seat pitch of 95 cm. You can read a comprehensive review of this flight here.

Search & Book

This deal will remain valid until July 25, 2020. The travel period for the absolutely cheapest flights from Newark is sadly quite restricted: you can fly from 26th November until December 9th. Nevertheless, if you’re flying from Singapore or are willing to pay roughly €150 (~US$162) more from Newark, you’ll have a far wider range of available dates.

We recommend using Google Flights in search for suiting travel dates (instructions). You can try to find cheaper flights using the dates with the lowest fares in our flight search. However, we recommend booking directly with Singapore Airlines. As these are expensive tickets, you can expect much better customer service if any problems arise and won’t be sorry afterward.

Why is booking with an airline better than with an online travel agency?

More often than not, online travel agencies offer lower fares than airlines do. We still recommend booking with the airlines directly. There are two main reasons for that:

Better Customer Service
In case any problems like delays, cancellations or missed connections arise, you can communicate directly with the airline. The airline has to take care of you because you have a contract with them.

If a travel agency issues your ticket, you may have to reach out to them first. You also depend on your OTA to forward information like flight changes instead of receiving them directly from the airline. In many cases, you may get a prime exhibition of responsibility shifting rather than problem-solving.

This especially applies to premium tickets. You don’t want to spend more than €1,000 to wind up with some budget OTA’s telephone hotline in case anything goes wrong.

Baggage and Other Fees
Economy fares not including hold luggage are industry standard by now. In most cases, travel agencies charge much higher baggage fees than the airlines themselves. If bags are not included in your fare, airlines are often the cheaper alternative.

This also applies to other things like food services, insurances or priority treatment. In almost all cases, you pay less for additional amenities when booking on the airlines’ website.
