Special Day Ticket: Travel through Switzerland Flexibly by Train, Bus and Boat all Day Long for €51

SBB Bahn Schweiz

The special day pass is now on sale again at the Swiss supermarket chain Coop and the electronics store InterDiscount. This is interesting for anyone who wants to explore Switzerland by public transport. As in previous years, you will receive a day pass for local public transport for CHF 49 (~€50).

You can then use the pass to travel flexibly through Switzerland by train, bus and tram for a day. Many shipping companies and selected mountain railways also accept the ticket.

The tickets are available from August 15 to September 11, 2022, or while stocks last. You can use it any day after purchase until October 2, 2022.

Conditions

It is best to buy the card on the spot in a Coop or InterDiscount branch as they are usually available in sufficient quantities there. At InterDiscount you can conveniently check availability online. Alternatively, you can also reserve them online in advance and then pick them up (costs CHF 1.25 (~€1.28) extra). Mail delivery is only possible in Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

After purchase, you can redeem the tickets flexibly for journeys up to October 2, 2022. On the day of travel, you have to validate the ticket, as usual, and it is then immediately valid for the current calendar day.

Please note the following conditions:

  • Purchase period: until September 11, 2022
  • Validity period: any day until October 2, 2022
  • Ticket is valid in 2nd class for one person on one day
  • Also valid in 1st class for a surcharge of CHF 20 (~€20) (with class change).
  • Refunds or exchanges are not possible
  • You can travel wherever the GA travelcard is valid (overview at SBB.ch)
  • The ticket is valid on any day from 00:00 to 23:59
(Monday to Sunday, including public holidays. Possibly also until 5:00 on the following day, like regular day tickets)
  • Supplements and reservations are not included
  • With the purchase of the special day ticket, you also get:
    • Discounted leisure tickets (ski areas, museums, zoos, etc.)
    • CHF 25 (~€26) discount when ordering a half-fare annual subscription (only customers without an active subscription)
    • 20% discount for SBB on-board catering

Bernina Express and Glacier Express for a Surcharge

The rides in the observation cars of the famous Glacier Express and Bernina Express are particularly popular. Theoretically, these journeys are also included in the GA validity area. Nevertheless, you need a paid seat reservation. This costs a whopping CHF 49 (~€50) for the Glacier Express and CHF 26 (~€27) for the Bernina Express.

You can get the reservation via the website of the Glacier Express or the Rhaetian Railway. Simply enter your desired route in the search mask. After selecting the route and passenger details, you then select that you have a GA travelcard:

Bernina express with GA travelcard
The mere seat reservation costs you CHF 26 (~€27) with the Bernina Express.

Now the price is reduced to the pure seat reservation costs. You can then print out the reservation yourself. You can find the timetable for the Glacier Express here, for the Bernina Express on the Rhaetian Railway.

Alternative: SBB Saver Day Pass For €53 or €30

The offer from Coop and Interdiscount is particularly interesting if you live near the border and would like to choose the day of travel flexibly. If the date is fixed in advance, you can also take a look at the SBB saver day pass.

If you book them well in advance, they also only cost CHF 52 (~€53). So you pay a little more than for the flexible tickets from Coop, but you can book the ticket conveniently online. With the half-fare card, the saver day passes even start at CHF 29 (~€30).

However, the special day ticket from Coop can be used much more flexibly. That’s why the saver day pass is worthwhile at best with a half-fare card during this period.
