Australia is a dream destination for many travelers. But the super long trip from Europe to the other side of the world scares some of us away from visiting this beautiful country. If there only where affordable flights in Business Class… Oh, wait, there are! Star Alliance carriers such as Lufthansa, Swiss and Thai Airways are selling discounted tickets for prices starting at only €2,734 for a return flight from Madrid to Sydney.
Combinations for this deal are manifold. Possible routes include flights with Lufthansa or Swiss to Asia via their hubs in Zurich or Germany. From Asia to Australia, a Star Alliance partner like ANA could take over. But there are also connections where Oneworld carriers could fly you “Down Under”.
Search & Book
Fare rules for this offer are unclear. In doubt, we’re assuming that this deal could be sold out pretty soon. The minimum stay requirements should be 6 days, and the fare will allow you to stay in Australia for up to 12 months before returning to Europe.
We’ve been able to find excellent availability starting in November and lasting until early 2020. There also is the occasional flight in August, September, and October. So be sure to check those dates out as well!
As always, Google flights (instructions) will show you all connections that can be booked for the low price that we promote here. Although you might run into trouble with this offer since Google will not forward you to the airline for booking in many cases. Skyscanner can often get you the lowest price. The other option is to call the airline using the number that Google Flights will provide in the results.
Mileage
Due to the seemingly endless possibilities of connections, it is hard to give reliable details about booking classes or mileage. But to get an idea: if you choose to travel with carriers of the Lufthansa group, tickets should be issued in booking class P. This means you will get an earning rate of 100% on most Star Alliance frequent traveler programs.

From the airport to the city
The airport is 9km from the city center and easily accessible by train, bus, taxi, and ferry. A ride by train costs about 10€, a taxi ride about 25€.
