Tokyo: €310 SAS Flights From All Over Europe in Late 2022 (Checked Bags Add €60)

tokyo radio tower golden hour

Star Alliance member SAS is selling cheap flights from eight European airports to Tokyo. The lowest prices are available from Gdańsk, with tickets as cheap as €310 (~PLN 1,458) for a roundtrip to the Japanese capital. Adding luggage to your booking, however, would increase the price by €60 (~PLN 282) – or even more from other departure cities.

If you’re going to fly without luggage, you can even save another roughly €30 by booking through an OTA.

Info

Worldwide travel restrictions are in place to slow the spread of Covid-19. We strongly recommend gathering detailed information about the travel and quarantine restrictions that apply to your desired origin and destination.

A good start is the International Air Transport Association (IATA) website. It provides current updates on a country’s immigration policies. Even better, the Covid-19 Travel Regulations Map is one of the most useful tools you can find.

SAS waives the rebooking fee for these tickets, but you’d still have to pay the price difference if you want to change flight dates. They are not refundable.

You may buy these tickets with departure from the following airports:

Our availability calendar shows you all available flight dates for €350 or less, from September 2022 onwards. While singular earlier flight are available at this low price, it is highly doubtful that touristic travel to Japan is possible by then.

You would first fly to Copenhagen, from where SAS would fly you to Tokyo on an Airbus A350, with a 3-3-3 seating in economy class. The long-haul flight is roughly 11 hours long.

This fare can be booked until January 16, 2022 for flights without a specific travel period. The minimum stay requirement is of 6 days (or a Sunday). Stopovers are not permitted. The travel period ends on November 2, 2022. This day marks the latest possible arrival in Europe.

Google Flights displays all available dates, as does our own calendar above, which will then either redirect you to SAS’ booking site, or to our Travel-Dealz flight search so that you can look for the cheapest OTA price.

Why is booking with an airline better than with an online travel agency?

More often than not, online travel agencies offer lower fares than airlines do. We still recommend booking with the airlines directly. There are three main reasons for that:

  1. The Covid-19 Pandemic
During the worldwide outbreak of Covid-19, planning international travel got more and more risky because of ever-changing restrictions. In contrast to many online travel agencies, most airlines modified their terms & conditions to become more customer friendly. Rebooking conditions are eased, change fees are waived and cancellations are much easier when there is no third party involved.

Further, by adding an OTA to your plans, you increase the risk of one service provider involved going bankrupt. Now, the airline and the online travel agency involved could vanish along with your money.
  2. Better Customer Service
In case any problems like delays, cancellations or missed connections arise, you can communicate directly with the airline. The airline has to take care of you because you have a contract with them.

If a travel agency issues your ticket, you may have to reach out to them first. You also depend on your OTA to forward you information like flight changes instead of receiving them directly from the airline. You may get a prime exhibition of responsibility shifting rather than problem-solving.

This especially applies to premium tickets. You don’t want to spend more than €1,000 to wind up with some budget OTA’s telephone hotline in case anything goes wrong.
  3. Baggage Fees
Economy fares not including hold luggage are more and more common. In most cases, travel agencies charge much higher baggage fees than the airlines themselves. If bags are not included in your fare, airlines are often the cheaper alternative.

Mileage

These tickets are issued in booking class T. Flying from Gdansk, you can expect to receive the following number of miles:

  • 11,314 Miles on Air India Flying Returns
  • 5,658 Award Miles + 938 PQP on United MileagePlus
  • 2,956 Miles on Miles&More
  • 2,956 Miles on Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles
  • 2,956 Award Miles + 160 Points on Miles&More 2024
  • 2,706 Miles on Virgin Atlantic Flying Club
  • 246 Miles on Etihad Guest
  • 200 Points on SAS EuroBonus

United MileagePlus is probably the best option to credit your flights, though the number of miles isn’t exactly ground-breaking.

Information & Tips for Tokyo

Tokyo is Japan’s capital and the world’s most populous metropolis as well as one of Japan’s 47 prefectures, consisting of 23 central city wards and multiple cities, towns, and villages west of the city center.

Today, Tokyo offers a great choice of shopping, entertainment, and culture to its visitors. The city’s history can be appreciated in many excellent museums, historic temples, and gardens. Contrary to common perception, Tokyo also offers many attractive green spaces in the city center.

Best Time to Visit

You can visit Tokyo at any time of year because of its moderate weather. However, the best times to visit Tokyo are from September to November and March to May. Summer in Tokyo is hot and humid and should be avoided.
Although winter in Tokyo is cold, it is not too cold for travel.

Three attractions in Tokyo

  1. Tsukiji Outer Market
A market for fresh seafood. A very vibrant place with lots to see (and smell).
  2. Akihabara
District for electronic and otaku goods. What one might have in mind when thinking of Tokyo. Newest gadgets to be found.
  3. Koishikawa Korakuen
Landscape garden next to Tokyo Dome. An oasis of calm in the middle of a bustling city.

Airports Narita & Haneda

The Tokyo Metropolitan Region has two international airports: Narita and Haneda. Narita is the airport where most flights from Europe will arrive. Tokyo-Narita is located 55 kilometers east of Tokyo city center and is served by the Narita Express. The journey time between the city center and the airport is approximately one hour.

Only a few international airlines fly to Haneda. From Haneda, which is south of the city center, it is much easier to get to Tokyo city center. The JR Tokyo Monorail System takes you to Hamamatsucho Station, which is not far from Tokyo Station.
