Information & Tips for Rwanda

The best time to visit the country of 1000 hills is during one of the dry seasons in June to September and mid-December to February, the latter being the first choice if you want to go gorilla trekking on dry ground and with the lowest malaria risk. Rwandan dry season does not mean it is super sunny. These hills are often covered by a veil of clouds, which keeps the temperatures moderate.

The two rainy seasons are from March to May with heavy rains and muddy roads, and from October to mid-December with occasional light showers. The rainy season is ideal for spotting chimpanzees. It is unlikely to see them in the dry season, due to food scarcity they withdraw far into the jungle’s interior.

Getting around is super easy and cheap. You can choose any mode of transport, they are safe and well regulated. Sorry, this is not the country where you see whole families on a bike taxi. The country makes up for it with other Instagram worthy motifs. Roads are in very good condition and buses on a punctual 30-minute schedule. The country is small and most places are a short or few hours drive from the capital.

Most visited sights are the three National parks of Akagera (safari), Volcanoes (gorilla hiking) and Nyungwe (chimpanzee observation) and Lake Kivu. Or spend one or two nights at the Hotel Des Mille Collines (Hotel Rwanda)while visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial.

Rwanda has a lively art scene, local designer scene (fashion and interior) and markets with great craftsmanship. If you love those things, consider booking the economy basic plus fare at €376 including 2×23 kg luggage instead.

If you have some money to burn, the country offers a good number of ultra luxe hotels which are beautifully embedded into the enviroment. One&Only Nyungwe House, One&Only Gorilla’s Nest, Bisate Lodge and Ruzizi Tented Lodge just to name a few. For medium budget (€90) Paradis Malahide Resort is an amazing hotel in prime location on Lake Kivu.
