Oneworld partners British Airways, American Airlines, and Iberia have teamed up to offer cheap first class tickets to the USA for people departing from Spanish cities. Prices to 8 US-destinations cost exactly €2,300 from Barcelona and Madrid and are available for flights until the end of the year. You can also fly to a few other destinations – or start your journey in Valencia, however at a slightly higher price. Availability starts in August and goes on for the rest of 2021.
Worldwide travel restrictions are in place to slow the spread of Covid-19. We strongly recommend gathering detailed information about the travel and quarantine restrictions that apply to your desired origin and destination.
A good start is the International Air Transport Association (IATA) website. It provides current updates on a country’s immigration policies. Even better, the Covid-19 Travel Regulations Map is one of the most useful tools you can find.
Here are some examples of where you can fly to:
- Dallas: €2,325
- Miami: €2,325
- Washington DC: €2,325
- San Francisco: €2,325
- Houston: €2,325
- Philadelphia: €2,325
- Seattle: €2,325
- Atlanta: €2,386
- Phoenix: €2,421
- Austin: €2,458
You would always first fly to London in business class, from where you would fly to the USA in first class with either British Airways or American Airlines on seats that can be extended into roughly 2 meter long fully flat beds and lots of privacy. You also get to bring 3 suitcases of 32 kg each.
We expect further shakeups in the airline industry over the following months. Some services might be cancelled, aircraft changed or downgraded. The schedule we describe may very well change.
Search & Book
The fare rules merely state that your trip has to include a Sunday. Furthermore, you need to fly on flights departing from Sunday to Wednesday. Sadly, Google Flights is not as helpful as usual for this deal, as it not only displays the correct fares but also Iberia’s business class fare, which it mistakenly considers to be a first class, even though Iberia doesn’t have a first class. We’d recommend simply trying out some dates between August and December using our tool above, which will redirect you to British Airways’ website.
The business class flights between Spain and London are issued in booking class J, while the long-haul flights are issued in booking class A. Should you fly from Barcelona to New York (and back), you’d get:
- 35,970 Miles on Alaska Mileage Plan
- 20,770 Avios + 500 TP on British Airways Executive Club
- 20,770 Award Miles + 1,380 Tier Miles on Iberia Plus
- 20,770 Avios on Aer Lingus AerClub
- 19,490 Points on Finnair Plus
- 12,110 Qmiles + 100 Qpoints on Qatar Privilege Club
- 12,110 Award Miles + 130 Tier Miles on Asia Miles
- 12,110 Miles on SriLankan FlySmiles
- 12,110 Miles on LATAM Pass
- 12,110 Miles on American AAdvantage
- 12,110 Miles on Japan Airlines Mileage Bank
- 12,110 Miles on Royal Jordanian Royal Club
- 12,110 Miles on S7 Airlines Priority Club
- 12,110 Miles on Malaysia Airlines Enrich
- 2,490 Miles on Royal Air Maroc Safar Flyer
As this is the shortest flight, all other routes would give you even more miles. One thing, however, always stays the same – the number of tier points that you’d get on British Airways’ Executive Club: 500 tier points!
Information & Tips for USA
The USA offers many sights, natural wonders and cultural significance. Thanks to numerous airlines offering flights across the Atlantic, it is always pretty inexpensive to get there. Alternatively, you can also cross the Atlantic by boat.
Immigration, ESTA & Visa Requirements
The USA has one of the strictest entry regulations in the world. Most EU citizens, among others, are lucky to be able to participate in the so-called Visa Waiver Program. If you get an electronic entry permit (ESTA) for about €12, you don’t need a visa for entry.
The Best Time to Visit
Due to its sheer size, the perfect time to visit the USA varies greatly from region to region. In winter, Florida is very popular due to the mild temperatures. In the summer the West and East Coasts are flooded by tourists which drives up the prices for hotels and flights and during the Indian Summer in late autumn New England is a very popular destination. The hurricane season between July and September can be dangerous in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. Florida and the southern states are regularly struck by these tropical storms. Blizzards occur from the East Coast to the Midwest during the winter months and regularly put air traffic and public life on hold.
The US dollar is widely used throughout the world and accepted as a currency in most tourist hotspots worldwide. That being said, carrying cash isn’t necessary in the US, all you need is a credit card! These are very common in the USA and are accepted pretty much everywhere without any issues. If you already have a credit card in your wallet, you should make sure that it does not charge a foreign currency fee if possible. Carrying a few dollars in cash doesn’t hurt though. You might need cash e.g. for the bus ticket if you want to buy it directly from the driver. Most of the time you even have to give exact change.
