Spanish Oneworld member Iberia offers an attractive promotion for cheap Premium Economy tickets with destination Panama City. Flights from Amsterdam are the cheapest, but you can find them with departure from various other cities in Europe, as well. All itineraries feature a short layover in Madrid.
You can find low fares with departure from:

- Paris at €748
- Lisbon at €756
- Toulouse at €759
- Brussels at €770
- Barcelona at €783
- Madrid (nonstop) at €830
If you try further airports in Spain, you may find similar prices to those from Barcelona.
Iberia’s Airbus A320 family aircraft operate flights within Europe. You will find yourself in Iberia’s rather narrow economy class on these flights. An Airbus A330-300 will carry you onwards to Panama City. Both Atlantic crossings will be Premium Economy segments.
We expect further shakeups in the airline industry over the following months. Some services might be cancelled, aircraft changed or downgraded. The schedule we describe may very well change.

Search & Book
Unfortunately, we weren’t able to find any fare rules. We can tell you that minimum stay seems to be at least six days, since Google Flights won’t find discounted fares for shorter durations. You can find daily availability up to March 2021, except for late December 2020. Due to travel restrictions in place to stop the spread of Covid-19, we currently advise against any travel plans for in 2020.
You can find all possible connections easily on Google Flights. You can find matching flight dates there (instructions) and use our flight search to find the best offer. Online travel agencies usually charge €25-30 less than Iberia. Despite that, to make cancellations and rebooking easier, we recommend booking on iberia.com. This way, you can avoid complications if any problems arise, since you can communicate directly with the airline.
Why is booking with an airline better than with an online travel agency?
More often than not, online travel agencies offer lower fares than airlines do. We still recommend booking with the airlines directly. There are two main reasons for that:
Better Customer Service
In case any problems like delays, cancellations or missed connections arise, you can communicate directly with the airline. The airline has to take care of you because you have a contract with them.
If a travel agency issues your ticket, you may have to reach out to them first. You also depend on your OTA to forward information like flight changes instead of receiving them directly from the airline. In many cases, you may get a prime exhibition of responsibility shifting rather than problem-solving.
This especially applies to premium tickets. You don’t want to spend more than €1,000 to wind up with some budget OTA’s telephone hotline in case anything goes wrong.
Baggage and Other Fees
Economy fares not including hold luggage are industry standard by now. In most cases, travel agencies charge much higher baggage fees than the airlines themselves. If bags are not included in your fare, airlines are often the cheaper alternative.
This also applies to other things like food services, insurances or priority treatment. In almost all cases, you pay less for additional amenities when booking on the airlines’ website.
Mileage
Premium Economy segments are usually issued in booking class T, and economy short-haul flights should be issued in booking class K. On the long haul trip, you can expect the following award mileage on Oneworld frequent flyer programs:
British Airways Executive Club members will be awarded 200 tier points for segments between Madrid and Panama. This is a third of what is needed to gain Oneworld Sapphire status.
Iberia’s Premium Economy
Iberia offers a typical Premium Economy product. On its A330 and A340 aircraft, seats are aligned in a 2-3-2 pattern. With 94 cm legroom, your knees most likely won’t touch the seat in front of you. Compared to basic Economy Class, you will receive better meal service, priority Check-In, and boarding as well as a small amenity kit. You can find a more detailed review here. The author of this text was pleased with the overall product but criticized the expensive and unreliable onboard WiFi.
