Finnair Plus is currently selling its award points with a bonus of up to 100%. Additionally, you get another 25% of the total points (incl. bonus) as status points. You need 80,000 status points for the Finnair Plus Gold status = Oneworld Sapphire. In theory, you could thus buy the status for €1,156 without ever having been on a plane. Ideally, your status would remain valid until November 30, 2022.
This way to get the Gold status is only theoretical for now. It is the first time that Finnair Plus “sells” status points. There may be a downside that we haven’t considered. Therefore, please carefully double-check our theory before buying the points.
Sadly, you can only buy a maximum of 150,000 award points + bonus at Finnair Plus per year. 300,000 purchased award points sadly only get you 75,000 status points. Nevertheless, you can convert the Finnair Plus award points into status points at a 3:1 rate. You can thus get the missing 5,000 status points by converting 15,000 award points. That transaction costs €10.
300,000 award points, however, currently cost €1,931. If you’re only looking for getting that status, you could get it even cheaper:
€1,146 Purchase Price + €10 Service Fee
If you purchase 89,000 award points + 71,200 bonus award points = 160,200 award points for €1,145.88, you get 40,050 status points as a bonus. For the rest of the 40,000 status points, you need to convert 120,000 of your freshly purchased award points into 40,000 status points. This costs a service fee of €10 = a total price of €1,156. You also get to keep 40,200 award points.
Each year, you can only get half of the required status points by converting award points – so 40,000 points for the Gold status.
Hint: Even if this is mathematically the cheapest option, you should consider purchasing 100,000 award points + 100,000 bonus = 200,000 award points & 50,000 status points for €1,287.50. You would not be paying a much higher price and would now get to keep 110,000 award points, which you could use for some nice sweet spots:
The status is then valid for at least 12 and at most 25 months. The decisive factor is the date at which you joined Finnair Plus.
If you create your Finnair Plus account in November, your year would end on November 30, 2021, and you get to keep your status until November 30, 2022.
If you’re already a member and your personal membership year ends on November 30, 2020, your status would sadly only be valid until November 30, 2021.
Even if status benefits aren’t worth much during this current worldwide situation, it is still an attractive offer, which one could consider. Finnair Plus is an attractive program and you can use the remaining award points for some sweet spots, when traveling is possible once again. However, you should be aware that there’s also always a danger of points devaluation.
