AMS YOW Air Canada
A fare war resulting in great prices for flights to Canada in Business Class

If so many airlines are trying to compete for customers on the same routes, we call this a fare-war. It often results in lower profit for the carriers. Consequently, it is an perfect time for travelers looking for cheap flights.

Depending on your favorite destination, you can basically choose the airline you like best since the list of carriers offering these great deals is long.

  • Star Alliance: Lufthansa, Air Canada, United, Swiss
  • SkyTeam: Air France, KLM, Delta, Alitalia
  • Oneworld: British Airways, American Airlines, Finnair

Air Canada is the only Canadian airline that is part of an alliance and allowed to fly between Canadian destinations. Therefore SkyTeam and Oneworld carries might partner up with Westjet or connect you to Canada via the USA. Keep in mind that you will always need an ESTA for flights to the United States. The eTA that is required for trips to Canada will no be enough.

Search & Book

Unfortunately, the fare rules don’t indicate until when this deal will be available. But as a general rule, we always recommend booking as soon as possible if you are interested in this offer.

The seasonal restrictions are the same for all airlines:

  • July 5th through August 25th
  • December 24th through December 31st

6 days after your arrival or at least one night from Saturday to Sunday are the minimum stay requirements. If your immigration status allows for it, you can stay in Canada for up to 12 months.

You’ll be able to find all available connections using Google Flights (instructions). If you want to compare prices that the OTAs offer, you can check out Skyscanner. Although we like to advise to book on one of the carriers’ websites, especially when buying higher-priced Business Class tickets.

Since there are so many destinations and different airlines included in this deal, it is impossible to show you the miles you might be credited with for every possible combination. We suggest you check to get a good idea. Below you’ll find some booking classes and a short overview of the earning rates that are possible.

Star Alliance

Most tickets will be issued in booking class P. You should have a good look at your personal combination of carrier and frequent flyer program. While some programs will credit you with revenue based miles(Miles&More), others will get you an earning rate of 200% (e.g., Aegean Miles+Bonus).

Booking class for most long-haul flights should be Z, tickets for connection flights can be J. Also here, the best rate you can get is 200% while the majority of frequent flyer programs will get you between 100% and 150% of the actual distance traveled.

Long-haul segments will be in booking class I, connection flights mostly in Y. 125% is the earning rate that you will get in most frequent flyer programs for the transatlantic segments, while connection flights should get you 100% at the most.

Information & Tips for Canada

The North American country of Canada is the second largest country in the world in terms of surface area. In Canada, English and French are the official languages. Tourists visit Canada because of its many natural attractions and large cities, and the flight prices vary between the east and west coasts. Flights to the east coast e.g. to Toronto or Montreal regularly cost less than 400€. For flights to the west coast, e.g. to Vancouver or Calgary, prices are closer to 400€ – 600€. Other destinations are mostly only reachable with an additional domestic flight. Just like in the USA, most airlines now only offer cheap fares that do not include checked baggage. For checked baggage you should budget an additional 50€ per direction.

Best Time to Travel

Canada is a huge country with many varying climate conditions, but it is safe to say that the winters (November to March) are very cold and snowy in most regions. Summers are relatively mild and partly rainy.

Immigration & Visa Requirements

Most EU citizens do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 6 months. However, an electronic travel waiver (eTA) must be applied for, similar to the ESTA required for entry into the USA. This costs about 5€ and is valid for up to 5 years.

Canada’s national currency is the Canadian Dollar (CAD). One euro is approximately $1.50 CAD. Many credit cards may charge a foreign currency fee of up to 2% to pay in CAD.

Transfer from Canada to the USA

Canada is located north of the USA and is the only other country apart from Mexico that shares a border with it (2 borders, actually: Alaska borders Canada in the southeast!) At many airports in Canada US immigration is already done before departure, so you arrive in the USA as a “domestic” passenger in the domestic terminal which can potentially save you lots of time since you do not have to stand in line at customs upon arriving. By land the same entry formalities take place as at the airport or by train at the station in Canada. Most EU citizens don’t need a visa and can instead make use of the digital ESTA procedure.
