Air Canada Altitude Status Match Challenge (Star Alliance Gold)

Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge Frankfurt

Air Canada‘s frequent flyer program Altitude is offering a status challenge that can be a fast track to one of their elite tiers. They will match your current frequent flyer status to an Altitude status if you meet all conditions of the challenge.

18,500 miles within 90 days

Apparently, Air Canada will only match your status up to their Altitude 50k tier, which also includes Star Alliance Gold. So you will be able to take advantage of certain benefits such as free lounge access for you and a companion, priority services, at least one piece of extra luggage and much more.

To meet the conditions of the challenge, you will have to earn 18,500 miles within 90 days or collect 18 flight segments with Air Canada. Your status will then be valid until the end of February. As of now, this would mean February 29th, 2020.

Info

You will be granted your matched status only after you’ve successfully finished the challenge, which means that during the qualification period you will not benefit from any Star Alliance or Air Canada-wide perks.

There are several ways to meet the criteria. One of them would be a return-flight from Rom Vancouver via Montreal in Busines Class. Since you’ll earn 150% tier miles for flights in Air Canada’s premium cabin, the one trip will be enough to become 50k member.

That being said, a flight like this can easily cost you €4,000. So you should keep your eyes open for great Business Class deals with Air Canada if you want to take on the challenge.

How-to

The first step will be an email that you have to sent to status.challange@aircanad.ca – include a proof of your current frequent flyer status (photo of a card, screenshot of your online account) and your Altitude membership number.

After a waiting period that can be up to 2 months, you should receive a personalized answer from Air Canada. That’s the one we received:

Hello,

Congratulations, you are now eligible to reach a higher Altitude status with an Altitude Challenge.
As of February 23rd, 2016, if you earn 18,500 Altitude Qualifying Miles (AQM) or 18 Altitude Qualifying Segments (AQS) on flights operated by Air Canada, Air Canada Express or Air Canada rouge over the next 90 days, you’ll be eligible to enjoy Altitude Elite 50K status through February 28, 2017.

Your current Altitude status (if any) will not change at the beginning of the 90 day challenge period. Once you earn the required number of AQM or AQS, your status will be updated within four weeks, and you will be invited to choose your Select Privileges. Your Altitude package will follow within four to six weeks.

Best regards,

The Air Canada Altitude Team

Terms & Conditions

Unfortunately, we don’t really know if the airline is still offering the challenge. Our last inquiry was a year ago. Since then we could only find one comment on statusmatcher.com saying that Air Canada didn’t even react to the inquiry.

Due to the upcoming changes with the Altitude program, we think that Air Canada might not allow any status challenges anymore. But it is always worth a try! And we would be happy to read from your experience in the comment section below!
