Review: Conrad Bali

Conrad Bali Suite Bed

Personally, I am a huge fan of the Conrad brand. The standard is very high and consistent. The Conrad Bali is no exception. There are other choices on the island like the Hilton Bali and the Hilton Garden Inn. However, if it fits into my budget, I would always prefer the Conrad.

Info

This stay has been fully paid by cash via an Impresario rate through our travel agent partner Cube Travel. The hotel did not know about the fact I was going to write this review. Conrad, in no way, sponsored this review.

Location

The Conrad Bali is situated in an area of the island called Nusa Dua, more specifically Benoa Bay. The area is generally speaking a little bit quiet and more suitable for families and couples that want to escape the crowds in Kuta and Seminyak. Places around the Conrad are a bit more expensive than in other parts of the island, but if you look around, you can still make good deals with food, drinks, massages, transport, etc.

Because the Conrad is a bit far off and traffic can be really bad, it can take a while to reach spots in Kuta or Seminyak for example. If you are travelling in that direction, I would advise always to tell the driver to take the toll road. It usually goes quicker. You will have to pay an additional 6,000 to 10,000 IDR, but it’s totally worth it in my opinion.

The Conrad has its own private beach. Generally speaking, it’s very clean and well maintained, and there are not many people. You will still see a little bit but not so much of plastic trash in the sand unfortunately, but for Bali, this is actually really, really good. Some other beaches have tons of plastic in their sand.

Check-In

I arrived at the main entrance and main lobby for the check-in. Having stayed at the Conrad Bali before, I was a little confused. Apparently, the main lobby is under renovation at the moment.

Main lobby under construction

As a result of this, Conrad set up a temporary lobby called “East Side Lobby”. It was a bit of a walk and didn’t have the same kind of views of the main lobby but in the end, not a big deal.

Check-in was quick and efficient. Thanks to my gold status that I received through my German Hilton VISA credit card, I received an upgrade. Because it was my birthday the next day, I am sure I received a very generous upgrade to a suite which was a very pleasant surprise.

I also received a late check out at 2 PM and an early check-in at 1 PM (so I had the room for 25 hours in total!).

It may have also had to do with the fact that I booked an Impresario rate through our travel agent partner Cube Travel. Impresario comes with a lot of benefits like:

  • Double Hilton Honors points (additionally to promotions and status bonus points)
  • Upgrade, late check-out, early check-in at check-in (all subject to availability)
  • 100 USD credit

Impresario can only be booked with Conrad and Waldorf properties, and the rate is equal to the flexible rate for that specific day. You get the most benefits out of a booking if you only stay for 1 night (since there is no minimum stay requirement).

The Resort

The resort is huge, and if you are there for the first time, you can definitely get lost. It happened to me before. The map that Conrad provides is definitely helpful:

Conrad Bali Review Map

Generally speaking, the resort is very well maintained and simply beautiful. You can probably wander around for half a day until you have seen everything. Even though the resort doesn’t look as big on the map, don’t get the wrong impression. From one side of the resort to the other side of the resort would probably take you 20-30 minutes at least.

The Room

The suite was obviously much more than I expected, so I was very happy. It is very spacious and feels luxurious.

The kitchenette comes with a Nespresso-like coffee machine. You usually get two coffee capsules at a time. But if you need more you can always call, and you will get them at no extra charge. But I didn’t like the coffee flavor that much to be honest. Next to the coffee machine, you also get different kind of teas.

There are two water bottles in the kitchen and two bottles in the bathroom. Whenever cleaning personnel comes, they replace the bottles if they have been used. Potentially you get 8 bottles of water per day therefore, since cleaning personnel comes twice a day (before lunch and in the afternoon or early evening).

The bed was super comfortable and the widest bed I have ever seen. If I had to guess, I would probably say it was at least 2.4m wide if not more. If you wanted, you could have easily fit 3-4 people in here without it being too tight.

The bathroom itself was even bigger than the total size of some of the very small hotel rooms I have stayed in before. The shower had great water pressure and good and stable water temperature. The bathroom amenities are by Shanghai Tang, and I just love the smell and overall quality of them.

However, I have to say that you can also see that the rooms are not brand new anymore. You will notice some wear and tear across the rooms. Especially the chairs had cracks, and the sofa had stains. I would have probably not been super happy about it if I paid the full price for the suite. However, since this was a complimentary upgrade, it obviously didn’t bother me.

There are also ongoing renovations throughout the whole complex. So I am sure the management is aware of the situation, and is trying to renovate where needed as soon as possible. I can also ensure that the Conrad tries to make all of their guests happy. I have once been unhappy in the past at this specific resort, and the staff was very apologetic and more than sorted the reason for my complaint out. So if you are unhappy about something like this, do not hesitate and let the staff know about the issue(s). They will for sure give their best to make you leave as a happy guest.

WiFi

The WiFi was fast and didn’t give me many problems. Fast WiFi is not a matter of course in Bali. As a Hilton Honors member, the standard WiFi is complimentary.

Amenities

Since the day after I checked in was my birthday, I received a birthday cake which was really a nice surprise. It was super tasty and very rich. Luckily I had friends visiting me, so we could all share a piece of this cake together.

Suite Exclusive Pool & Lounge

The resort is designed in a way that the suites have their own section in the resort. The RIN restaurant is very close to the suites. This is where breakfast is served exclusively to suite guests. The executive lounge is right above the RIN restaurant and the exclusive pool only for suites guests is in front:

The executive lounge is nice, spacious, luxurious, and quiet. I went for complimentary afternoon cocktails and loved the quality of offered cocktails and finger food:

Spa

The spa in the Conrad Bali is called Jiwa Spa. Unfortunately, it is under renovation, which means that the facilities cannot be used for massage treatments. Instead, they have utilized some of the suites as massage rooms. I have spoken to the guest relations manager, and he told me that the construction will still take until December 2019 at least.

I have taken advantage of their massage treatments several times with different staff members. Never have I been disappointed. The staff is highly qualified (which seems to be the exception in Bali), and the therapists make sure the room temperature is to your liking, and their applied pressure is good for you.

But the treatments are very pricey for Bali terms. A 60 minute Balinese massage (which is the cheapest treatment) is IDR 1,045,000 + 21% service & taxes = IDR 1,264,450 (~€74). This is more than you would pay in countries like Germany. But if you keep the 25% discount for Diamond members in mind (I received Diamond status benefits as a Gold status holder) and the points you earn with your spend, it can still be good value! I am not sure if Gold members also receive a 25% discount for spa treatments. If so, please let us know in the comments.

Gym

If you are into fitness, you will be happy to read that the gym at the Conrad is very well equipped. The only thing that is probably missing is a rack with a barbell bar, but other than that everything you may need for a heavy full-body workout is there. I have read in another review that the equipment feels old. I cannot confirm this. Maybe the equipment has been renewed in the meantime.

Breakfast

As a suite guest you can have breakfast at two different spots. A more intimate breakfast with less choice at RIN restaurant or the full buffet at SUKU restaurant.

The one morning I chose breakfast at RIN. The selection is limited but of very high quality. You can also order a la carte breakfast options:

The other morning (I had two 1-night-stays at Conrad) I chose to eat at the SUKU restaurant. The overall quality of the foods offered at both breakfast spots doesn’t differ and is very high. The service at SUKU was outstanding. Really enjoyed eating there. They also have additional a la carte items that you can order at an additional price. These were high quality foods that obviously cannot be offered without an extra charge. Therefore, I didn’t mind the extra charge. I would have probably tried some of their choices if I stayed longer.

Diamond Status Benefits

I am a Gold status holder. However, I received a letter with Diamond status benefits, and all of these benefits were also applied.

The following benefits were offered:

  • Breakfast at SUKU Restaurant or RIN Restaurant or in-room (at no extra charge!)
  • Afternoon tea from 3 PM to 5 PM at RIN Restaurant
  • Evening cocktails from 5 PM to 7 PM at Conrad Suites Lounge
  • Complimentary internet access
  • 15% off laundry & dry cleaning
  • 15% off food & beverage in restaurants and bar
  • 15% off meeting room rental
  • 25% off on all Jiwa Therapeutic treatments (minimum 60-min treatment; excluding pool massage, little souls, family spa package salon service and spa retail)

Conclusion

The Conrad Bali is an amazing resort, in my opinion. It is really not cheap, especially keeping in mind that you can get a good 4-star hotel room way below IDR 1,500,000 (€100), sometimes even starting at €50 a night. The one night at this resort including all Impresario benefits was around €200. The other night was around €230. However, I really feel it is worth considering this resort for parts of your holiday in Bali if you enjoy pampering yourself a bit. The quality of the foods offered is great, the service is great, and the complex is well maintained. Also, if you calculate the $100 voucher in, and the cashback you get through the Hilton Honors points, the price is actually not so bad. The only slightly negative thing I think is that the interior is getting a bit worn out, and needs to be replaced pretty soon. But since management is making an effort in renovating the complex wherever it’s needed, I am sure this will soon happen anyway.
