Everything About Lounge Access With the American Express Platinum Card

Centurion Lounge Houston

The American Express Platinum Card doesn’t only grant you access to airport lounges worldwide through the included Priority Pass, but there are also other cooperations with airlines and Amex even runs its own lounges at some airports! In this article, you’ll find out which lounges you have access to.

Here’s a map of all lounges, excl. those that you’d get in using your Priority Pass anyways:

Priority Pass Lounge

The heart and soul of the Platinum card is the free Priority Pass membership. This grants you free worldwide access to over 1,000 airport lounges, regardless of which airline and in which travel class you’re flying. You can also get a Priority Pass for an additional card-holder.

Warning

The Amex merely entitles you to access lounges in the Priority Pass network, but not to e.g. restaurants or minute suites.

Since July 2019, you can even bring a guest to the lounge! Until then, that had only been possible by paying a hefty surcharge per visit. If you consider the second Priority Pass for the additional card-holder, you could get up to 4 people into a lounge with a single American Express card.

When you receive your Platinum card, you’ll also receive the application for two Priority Pass Prestige cards. The second Priority Pass can only be issued to the holder of your American Express partner card. The card number has to be entered in the application. Subsequently, you’ll be sent the Priority Pass within 14 workdays.

You can find all lounges, by clicking on Find lounges and more:

The lounges are usually not run by Priority Pass but by cooperation partners. That’s why the design and quality of the lounges vary a lot. At some airports, where Priority Pass doesn’t have a lounge partner, they cooperate with airport restaurants. There, however, are sadly not included in the Platinum Card.

Lufthansa’s Business, Senator & First Class Lounge

Since September 2017, you’ll have access to a selection of Lufthansa lounges thanks to a cooperation between Lufthansa and American Express. As an American Express Platinum cardholder, you’ll have access to the business class lounge. If you’re flying in business class, you can use the Senator lounge. Should you have a Centurion Card, you’d even have access to the first class lounge, regardless of your booked travel class!

To have access, you need a valid boarding pass for a Lufthansa Group flight (Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, or Eurowings) on the same day. This offer is now valid indefinitely, after only having been extended for a couple of months in the past. Sadly, bringing a guest into the lounge would cost a fee.

(Centurion) Lounges by American Express

Currently, American Express runs its own The Centurion Lounges or similar concepts at 20 airports. There, Platinum or Centurion cardholders have free access with up to two guests. You only need to have a boarding pass (as the lounges are beyond the security checkpoints) with departure on the same day, and an ID, e.g. your passport.

The Centurion lounges are furnished in a quite modern and stylish way. Besides free drinks and some food, you’ll sometimes even be able to enjoy freshly mixed cocktails. In the other American Express Lounges, the service can be somewhat limited.
